Travel For Newcomers: What To Do When Your Flight Is Delayed Or Cancelled.

Flying is one of my favorite ways to travel, but sometimes, unexpected delays and cancellations can really kill the mood and mess up your plans. Whether it’s due to bad weather, technical issues, or other unforeseen circumstances, flight disruptions are frustrating and stressful.

However, knowing how to handle these situations can make a world of difference. New to flying? Let’s go over the steps to take when your flight is delayed or cancelled, ensuring a smoother travel experience.

1. Don't Panic.

I know this one seems like a silly one or one that you will roll your eyes at like “oh, I know. I get it” but it is very different when your connecting flight gets canceled and you have a meeting in the morning…

You have options, trust me. And please, please, please do not yell at the staff. They are doing their jobs the best they can in the situation. Be kind, don’t be a Karen.

2. Stay Informed

Every Airline has an app for your phone. Download it and turn on notifications days before your flight. The sooner you know information, the better you can make choices. There is also

Most airlines also provide real-time updates through their official websites, or airport screens. Check these sources regularly for the latest information on your flight’s status, gate changes, and estimated departure times.

3. Contact the Airline

If you’re already at the airport when you hear about the delay or cancellation, head to the airline’s customer service desk. Some delays are short, no need to take action unless it deeply affects your travel plans

If you’re still at home or a hotel, call the airline’s customer service hotline. Be patient; there may be a long wait on the phone or at the service desk. While waiting, use the airline’s mobile app or website to explore alternative flight options.

Familiarize yourself with your rights as a passenger. Depending on where you’re flying from and the airline’s policy, you may be entitled to compensation, meals, accommodation, or alternative transportation if your flight is significantly delayed or cancelled

4. Rebook or Request Refunds

Once you’ve contacted the airline and explored your options, decide whether you want to rebook your flight or request a refund. Airlines typically offer alternative flights or may reroute you through another airport if necessary. If you’re no longer interested in traveling, you can request a refund for your ticket, which may be subject to the airline’s refund policy.

5. Make Alternative Arrangements

If the delay or cancellation significantly disrupts your plans, such as missing a connecting flight, and the airline was not helpful. It is time to make alternative arrangements. This might involve booking a hotel, arranging ground transportation, or even exploring other travel options like trains or buses, depending on your destination.

Remember, patience and a positive attitude can go a long way in ensuring a stress-free travel experience even when things don’t go as planned.
