Travel For Newcomers: How To Get Through Security

The airport is a time warp.

People beginning and ending their days in a myriad of different time zones. Want a margarita at 7am? Donuts at 12pm? Nap in the middle of the floor? Sure!

It is a place where it feels like everyone knows what to do, except for you.. If you are new to traveling then it can feel like a very isolating experience.

I didn’t even step foot onto a plane until I was 18, the time after that I was 21 and I was flying alone.

One of my best friends called me at 4am her time while I drove to the airport. “Do you want to know how to go through security?

It’s like she could sense my anxiety surrounding it in her sleep.

Let’s get down to the very, very basics. Security Lines; How do you get through these anxiety inducing lines?

Arrive Early:

Give yourself time. You do not want to feel anxious about maybe being late, but not too much time. I swear, you do not need to be there 5 hours before.

Allow time for parking, if you drive there. I highly recommend Uber or get someone you love to drop you off. You deserve to be dropped off and picked off at the front, like the royalty you are.

Prepare Your Documents:

Put your passport, license, or ID in a separate pocket.

Have it out and ready for them to scan at the front. Only your ID is needed.

Yes, I have checked for ID fifteen times in the airport too. Don’t feel bad.

Pack Wisely:

Avoid unnecessary delays by packing your carry-on bags correctly. TSA does not allow anything over 3.4oz currently. Not, 3.4oz left in the container, but a 3.4oz container is needed.

My tip is to get refillable containers at any convenience store and use your favorite products. Don’t settle for the products the stores put in “travel size”.

Pro Tip: Put ANY and ALL important medication into your personal item or Carry On.

Dress The Part:

Wearing travel-friendly attire can make the security process a better experience. Choose clothing and footwear that are comfortable and easy to remove if required. If you have sunglasses then pop them on! And, you can keep your jewelry on.

The Procedure:

In a normal line, let’s go quick.

You will grab your first basket, put your shoes and jacket in it, and pop it on the counter.

Second basket is your laptop, ipad, and phone.

Third basket is your personal item(E.G. your purse, backpack, or “under the seat” item). If you have a carry on, then put the entire carry on onto the counter.

Travel For Newcomers: What Is TSA Precheck & How To Get It

Did you notice the PreCheck Line:

If you travel a lot, or want more ease then let’s talk about  enrolling in trusted traveler programs such as TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.

These programs offer expedited screening benefits, they allow  you to enjoy shorter lines and reduced security procedures. While there may be an application process and fee involved, the time and stress saved in the long run.

Grab your things on the other side, put your shoes on, and let’s go to our gate!
