Is Mexico Safe for Travel?

What do you think of when I say, “Mexico”? Do visions of lively city streets, high class resorts, or stunning white sand beaches fill your mind? Or is it nothing close to that? Is it something more sinister?

Let’s get into it. Is Mexico Safe for Travel?

Short answer, of course! Living in San Diego puts us extremely close to the Border, and I love Mexico! I have been many places within this beautiful country.

With a staggering 30 Million tourists visiting yearly, Mexico offers a variety of natural wonders, historic sites, and I haven’t even mentioned how incredible the food is yet.

Long Answer Is....

I am not known to “beat around the bush” and I KNOW what your well meaning friends and family send you when you even mention planning a trip. Yes, there is crime here and it does range from simple theft to more violet crime. There is a certain level of alertness, and caution I take when visiting to keep myself out of harm’s way.

Like all countries, there are areas more known for crime, or activities known to be more risky. To say all of Mexico is “unsafe” or “dangerous” is just a little silly when you think about it.

How Can I Stay Safe While Traveling?

  • Avoid High Risk Areas: Everywhere is going to have areas known for high crime, and stay out of those areas.
  • Do Not Hike Alone: Stay within a group! Safety in numbers is a very real concept.
  • Respect Local Customs: Familiarize yourself with Mexican customs and cultural norms to show respect to the local population.
  • Use Licensed Transportation: When exploring the country, use registered taxis or reputable transportation services recommended by your hotel or tour operators.
  • Be Mindful of Your Belongings: Exercise caution with your personal belongings, especially in crowded places or tourist hotspots, to avoid petty theft.
  • Trust Your Instincts: If a situation feels uncomfortable or unsafe, remove yourself from it and seek assistance if necessary.
