Travel For Newcomers: What Is TSA Precheck & How To Get It

I know you saw them. The TSA Precheck individuals being whisked past you like some sort of celebrity all while you are stuck in this line. How long as it been now?

With TSA PreCheck, you can wave goodbye to those long lines and enjoy a more seamless journey.

Now, how do you get it?

What is TSA PreCheck?

TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program offered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the United States. It grants pre-screened travelers access to dedicated security lanes, where you can enjoy a quicker screening process with reduced requirements, like you can keep your shoes on for one.

Benefits of TSA PreCheck:

Let’s go over the benefits

  • Expedited Screening: With TSA PreCheck, you can breeze through security checkpoints without having to remove your shoes, belt, light outerwear, or take out your laptop and liquids from your bag. No undressing without dinner here.
  • Shorter Lines: TSA PreCheck members have access to dedicated lanes, which are often shorter and less crowded than regular security lines. This means you can spend less time waiting and more time enjoying your airport mimosa.
  • Reduced Stress: TSA PreCheck helps alleviate some of the stress and anxiety associated with airport security. It allows you to start your trip on a little more relaxed note.

How to Apply for TSA PreCheck:

Getting started with TSA PreCheck is an easy process:

  • Online Application: Begin by completing an online application on the TSA PreCheck website. Provide your personal information, including your full name, date of birth, and contact details. Nothing strange here.

  • Schedule an Appointment: After submitting your application, you will be prompted to schedule an in-person appointment at a TSA enrollment center. During this appointment, you will provide necessary identification documents, undergo a background check, and have your fingerprints taken.

  • Application Fee: There is an application fee (usually around $85) payable at the time of enrollment. Accepted payment methods include credit cards, money orders, or certified/cashier’s checks. Some credit cards and loyalty programs offer reimbursement for the TSA PreCheck application fee, so it’s worth checking if you have such benefits.

  • Wait for Approval: Once you have completed your appointment, it generally takes a few weeks to receive your TSA PreCheck approval. Once approved, you will be assigned a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you can use when booking flights to ensure TSA PreCheck benefits are applied to your boarding pass. They will email you when you are accepted!

Enjoying TSA PreCheck Benefits:

Once approved and armed with your KTN, it’s time to enjoy the perks of TSA PreCheck:

  • Book Your Flights: Ensure that you include your KTN when booking flights. This can usually be done during the booking process or by adding it to your frequent flyer profile with the airline.

  •  Arrival at the Airport: When you arrive at the airport, look for the TSA PreCheck signs and designated lanes. Present your boarding pass to the TSA officer, who will verify your eligibility for expedited screening.

  • Enjoy the Experience: Once you’re in the TSA PreCheck line, you can keep your shoes, belts, and light outerwear on, leave your laptop and liquids in your bag, and pass through the screening process efficiently. Enjoy the convenience and time savings!

If you travel more than 4 times a year then it was worth it for me. More time sipping, less time retying my shoes.
